Calendar Current session started Jan 3, 2023 at 11 am, runs for 7 weeks

Use your dog’s natural talent of sniffing and turn it into a fun game you can play with any dog indoors or outdoors. Your dog will love using their nose to sniff their way to rewards. Scent work is a sport that mimics the task of working detection dogs to locate a scent and communicate to the handler that the scent has been found. Scent work games teach your dog how to problem to find the target odor.

The focus for this class will be to build value the target odor and for searching out that target odor, introduce and build drive for hunting, and emphasize the importance of staying at source. Many fun games are used to progress the teams at their own pace. We will also cover handling of odor, aging your hides, equipment and proofing games.

This is for dogs that are just starting out and not yet on odor or just started.Shy and reactive dogs can participate because only one dog is allowed to search at a time. Scent work can make timid dogs feel more confident, while reactive dogs can learn to focus on a task, rather than a trigger.

Prerequisites: Dog must be able to be comfortable and quiet in a crate or pen while not working! Please bring a crate/pen for your dog starting on the first night. You can also bring a chair.

Please bring 2 of your dog’s favorite treats (high value only) cut up into small pieces. No crumbly treats. Treats must be small or pea sized because we will use repeated rewards. Dog may wear a flat buckle collar or harness. Please use a 6 foot or leash (No flexi-leads). Please remove anything doggie bags or other items from the leash before class. Please bring a hungry dog.

Scent Work is a fun sport based on work done by real-world detection dogs. Instead of locating drugs or explosives, Scent Work uses four essential oils – birch, anise, clove, and cypress – to find different target scents that can be hidden anywhere. The role of the handler is not to direct, but to assist, the dog. The dog learns how to tell the handler that scent has been found, even if there are distractions such as toys and food. This is a wonderful way to build confidence, is great for stimulating your dog’s mind, and is enjoyed by all dogs whether young or old.

This class is for teams that are familiar with the basic foundations of searching for a “high value” treat.  Dogs will be introduced to the odors (essential oils) and practice beginning searches in this class.

Please bring to class a crate for your dog and lots of “high-value” treats, as well as a flat buckle, collar, or harness. Leashes should be easy to take on and off, and at least 6 feet in length.
